Sometimes we have feelings that are so big that we can’t hold them inside. Imagine being a young child, being pre-verbal, a toddler with only a few words, or a child who can’t yet identify distinct feelings…What should they do to express themselves? How can you know how they are feeling and how can you help them identify their own feelings? With physical actions and expressions! Physically showing these feelings can help young children communicate, as well as ventilate and let those feelings out.

Putting your child to bed changes as your child grows, and so do the bedtime rituals at each stage of growth. Once your child is grown-up and bigger than you, and maybe even going to bed after you, you won’t hold them in your arms…but you will always hold them in your heart.

A fun geography lesson to the tune of the traditional Irish song, Rattlin Bog. We live on the earth, on a continent, in a country, in a province or state, in a city or town, and in a specific building. Do you know where YOU are in the world? Do you know your address? Can you name all the steps from your specific address to your continent on this great big planet?

I’ve got ants in my pants! Eek! This is a silly song about ants being in different articles of clothing and involves a lot of shaking, but there’s a lesson here for older children: if someone is bothering you or a friend is being mean, instead of trying a lot of short-term solutions, have a chat. Ask why. You might get a surprising answer that makes you realise that if you asked earlier, you would’ve saved yourself a lot of time and trouble.

Party
Party is all about inclusion: this neo-funk tune tells of a party where everyone is welcome regardless of age, ability, race, colour, religion, gender, etc. At this party, there are no labels, and everyone is included and valued for being exactly who they are. Diversity is crucial and we must all get along in this big, beautiful world of ours. Party is a great tool for teaching about inclusion and opening discussions surrounding the importance of inclusion for everyone.

Fill Your Bucket
Based on the classic social-emotional learning book series by Carol McCloud, this song summarizes her overall premise and teaches children that they have the power to not only choose to make themselves and others happy by being kind, but that they also have the ability to protect their own happiness in difficult situations. An upbeat mix of swing, folk and pop that you’ll love singing along with.

I’m Good Enough
Have you ever felt nervous or anxious about failure? About being excluded? About not doing well? This upbeat pop tune reminds us that we are good enough exactly the way we are, and that as long as we are trying our best, we are at our best…and that is the only thing that matters. This positive affirmation song outlines how we can be braver and have self-confidence in the face of struggle and overcome our fears.

The Angry Song
Everyone gets angry, and anger is a perfectly acceptable feeling. All feelings are valid. Sometimes we get so angry we feel like we’re going to explode! But before that happens, what can we do to prevent ourselves from exploding and doing something we later regret, like hurting someone else with our mean words or actions, or hurting ourselves? In this song, we learn to STOP or FREEZE when we are angry, to count to 5 (or more), walk away to somewhere calm, take deep breaths, and then think about the right thing to do to explain—using our words and not our bodies—how we feel, but not hurt anyone in the process. Learning to self-regulate our emotions is difficult, and the bigger the feeling, the harder it is. With techniques to calm our bodies and regular practice we become better at it and gain new confidence in our own abilities, growing more independent and self-reliant.

Nightmare
Nightmares can be terrifying and sometimes they’re so vivid that we think they’re real after we wake up…to the point of seeing or hearing the nightmare even after we think we’ve woken up. For children, one can always yell for help from a parent when we’re scared, tell the nightmare to “go away” forcefully, and to remember what our parents always tell us: take some deep breaths and tell ourselves that nightmares are not real!

Empathy
Empathy is a non-tangible entity and it isn’t really a feeling, so it can be difficult to explain in clear language. What exactly is it and why is it important? This song uses clear language and simply imagery to define for children that “empathy is something deep inside of me that helps me to see, clearly, the feelings in your heart.” This song teaches us that it’s importance is that is can lead to mutual understanding, in that “empathy is when I imagine I’m inside of your heart: I feel what you feel, I think what you think, and it isn’t very easy to do…but when I try to understand what’s inside of your heart, I hope you’ll do your best to understand what’s inside of mine, too.”

Include Me
Everyone wants to be—and needs and deserves to be—included. This song is sung from the perspective of a child who is left out, and who wants to know that someone even knows their name, let alone have a friend. For kids who already feel accepted, it is crucial to understand inclusion, in all its forms, from the perspective of someone who is excluded. This song offers several calls to action to include everyone in a number of different ways and settings.

Happy for You
We all have different talents. We all have times that we will do well, and other times, maybe not so much. In competitions, there may only be one winner, and while only one person can win, there is real joy in genuinely being happy for the person that does, even if it isn’t you! When we say, “I’m Happy for You!” and when we are truly happy for our friends and celebrate their wins, we foster emotional maturity, strengthen friendships, and create community. As an added bonus, maybe next time, when we win, those same friends will be there for us, cheering us on!

Sharing (Is Hard to Do)
This song is for the parents as much as it is for children, because while sharing is important, it’s difficult. This funny musical story follows the story of a child who understands that the promise to share all of their toys is necessary to have a playdate on the weekend, but as their friend arrives and rings the doorbell, panics and realizes that they’re not ready to share a few special toys. What unfolds is a lesson for parents as well as children!

A Fishy Tale
that turns into a modern-day fable about the importance of not judging a book by it’s cover. With several humorous plot twists, and after a few scary moments, it has a happy ending with positive moral to discuss in the classroom or around the dinner table.
